Nominations for section awards are typically due in May. The Carl S. Shultz Award for Lifetime Achievement This award honors individuals who have made an outstanding lifetime contribution to the field of population and reproductive health. It is named for Dr. Carl S. Shultz, a pediatrician and public servant who was instrumental in the creation and implementation of the federal family planning program, commonly known as Title X. At the first meeting of the PFPRH section in 1976, Dr. Shultz proposed the establishment of this award. Sadly, he died soon after the idea for the award had been accepted by the section. Section members honored his memory by naming the award for him. Awardees comprise an honor roll of the field of reproductive health in the U.S. and around the world.
This award is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Felicia Stewart and her vision, commitment, leadership, and advocacy in our field. Dr. Stewart’s career included serving as HHS’s Deputy Assistant Secretary of Population Affairs and as Co-Director of the Bixby Center for Reproductive Health Research and Policy at the University of California, San Francisco. The award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated a strong commitment to advocacy on behalf of reproductive health and rights.
This award honors individuals who deserve recognition early in their careers because of their professional accomplishments, initiative and dedication to the field, especially to the work of the section.
In 2003, a Special Recognition Award was presented to Jane Roberts and Lois Abraham in honor of their work creating the 34 Million Friends of UNFPA campaign. The campaign asked 34 million Americans to contribute $1 each to the United Nations Population Fund to help replace $34 million withheld from UNFPA by the U.S. government. More than 100,000 Friends have contributed $3.2 million as of late 2006. |
